""I Just Love Bugs"" is the seventeenth episode of the first season of Barney & Friends.

Plot[]

Barney and the kids are really "going buggy" as they discover the world of bugs and insects around us. Tina explains that she did a report on bees in school and that she is really interested in bugs, something that she gets bugged about in school. Luci explains that it's nothing she should worry about and Michael tells a story of "The Ant and the Grasshopper". In school, the kids learn more about different insects from spiders and flies, to beautiful butterflies which are celebrated with both the song "Five Little Butterflies" and a ballet where Luci, Tina, and Derek pretend to be butterflies. When Barney shows off his favorite bugs, fireflies (or lightning bugs), they show how even the smallest creatures can show love.

Trivia[]

  • This episode marked:
    • The first episode to have quotation marks in the title.
    • The only time during Season 1 where the Barney doll is shown in the closing shot with the lights turned off.
    • The second episode to only feature The Backyard Gang kids.
  • Tosha's name does not appear in the credits of this episode (or "1-2-3-4-5 Senses!"), as this episode was filmed before "Be a Friend".
  • When Derek says, "Who's scared of some ol' toy bug?" (right before Tina scares Derek and Michael with the toy fly), Michael appears to be mouthing the words "toy bug".
  • After this episode, the song "Twinkle Little Lightning Bug" won't be sung for seven years, until the Season 6 semi-remake of this episode, "Itty Bitty Bugs".
  • This group (Derek, Luci, Michael, Tina) also appeared in "Our Earth, Our Home".
  • In this episode, the Barney doll is seen on the tire swing during Baby Bumblebee, but at the end of the song, Barney immediately surprises Tina by saying, "Gotcha! You can't get away from me!", and jumping up to her. It's possible that Barney may have came to life offscreen, as the sound effect that plays when he comes to life is not heard.
  • The ladybug picture at the end of the original closing credits of this episode is seen upside down, while in Seasons 2 and 3, it is seen in the beginning of the credits right-side up.
  • The Season 6 episode "Itty Bitty Bugs" is a semi-remake to this episode.
