- February: Lyrick Studios teamed with FAO Schwarz at a pre-Toy Fair FAO Schwarz event in New York City featuring an appearance by First Book celebrity spokesperson Reba McEntire and performances by Barney and The Wiggles.[1] A donation check from Barney was made.[2]
- February 9: HIT Entertainment acquires Lyrick Studios, owners of the Barney franchise.[3][4]
- April 25: Barney's Musical Castle ends its North American tour at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Des Moines IA.
- July 17: Barney appears at an MLB game where the Chicago Cubs played against the Kansas City Royals. During the game he threw the first pitch and sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh inning stretch. During the game, the first seven thousand kids received a a free commemorative Barney doll and a Cubs tee.
- July: Barney's Zoo Tour begins touring.
- August 31: Lyrick Studios is folded into HIT Entertainment.
- October 27: Barney appears at the 8th Annual Dream Halloween.
- November 22: Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ performed "I Love the Holidays" at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

- November 14: JAKKS Pacific Inc. announced that its Flying Colors division signed a multi-year licensing agreement with HIT Entertainment to manufacture and market a line of craft activity and stationery kits based on Barney, with the line slated to hit retail in 2002.[6]
