Barney's Colorful World! is a stage show that was directed and choreographed by Penny Wilson, written by Stephen White with songs in the show written by various individuals. It is based on the American live-action educational children's television series Barney & Friends. After a soft run in Memphis, Tennessee,[1] the show made its world premiere on January 23, 2003[2] at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. The show performed in over eighty cities and performed over four-hundred shows.
This was Barney's fifth (major) stage show and third national stage show tour (after Barney's Big Surprise and Barney's Musical Castle). Produced by HIT Entertainment, the show toured in North America until November 2004 and was presented by "Toys "R" Us" in that country. Following North America, the show went on to perform in Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico.
On September 14, 2004, Barney's Colorful World! was released on VHS and DVD, having the show filmed at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix, Arizona in March 2004. It was the fifth and last Barney stage show to be released on home video.
Plot
Act 1
The video opens with the children Jackson, Laura and Stacy putting together a pretend show with plush toys, with Barney as the star. By the children using their imaginations, the show proceeds to begin. Barney springs to life from behind the curtain and the the children transition from a room in a house to a theater. As Barney comes out, he skips and bounces around on stage, greeting the audience under the "Barney Theme Song".
Barney becomes very happy to see the audience smiling, prompting him to sing "If You're Happy and You Know It". After the song, Barney wants to introduce some friends of his to the audience, taking them to the park. Upon arriving, Barney doesn't see his friends, and eventually rings the caboose bell to call them out. As the children come out, they join Barney in singing "Being Together". After the song, Barney introduces the audience to Sarah, Donny, Mike and Gina respectively. Glad that Barney rang the caboose bell, the bell is rang once more, prompting Barney and the children to wonder who rang it. Asking the audience who rang the bell, the audience sees it was Baby Bop prompting her to come out. Seeing the audience, Baby Bop wonders who they are, in which Barney declares that they're friends. Happy to see the audience, Baby Bop invites everyone to say silly things. Barney suggests that she tries an easier activity that everyone knows, queuing up the song "Mr. Knickerbocker". After playing "Mr. Knickerbocker" the children show Barney and Baby Bop toys they were playing with before everyone arrived. Mike shows off his toy airplane, Sarah shows off her toy boat, Donny shows off his toy bus and Gina shows her toy globe. Unsure what game to play with their toys, Barney suggests that the children use the Idea Bench to get an idea of what to do. While going round and round on the Idea Bench, they decide to take a trip around the world.
Using their imaginations, Mike's toy airplane becomes a real airplane, in which BJ appears to be the pilot. Everyone sings "The Airplane Song" and they land in the jungle. As they sing "Jungle Adventure" a monkey comes out on stage and leaves when the song ends. Baby Bop then asks Barney if she can search for another animal. The children wonder as to what she'll find and she soon comes out with an elephant, prompting everyone to sing "The Elephant Song". As the elephant leaves at the end of song, BJ thinks the elephant made loud noises when leaving, in which Barney concluded that it was no longer the elephant but thunder and it begins to rain. Barney suggests that everyone use their imaginations to change the rain into something more fun, in which they all sing "If All the Raindrops". The rain eventually stops.
Donny then thanks Barney for taking them to the jungle. BJ adds that it was great but a little too green, and suggested they go someplace else with a different color. Barney then adds that they'll go someplace with no greenery at all. He leaves the stage and then comes back with Donny's toy bus, which is now a real one, called the "Imagination Express". As BJ and Baby Bop board the bus, Barney invites everyone to sing "The Wheels on the Bus" as they continue their travels. They soon arrive at their next destination and Barney goes to park the bus. When Barney returns to the stage, he's seen in winter clothes as he reveals they traveled to the arctic. Baby Bop, BJ and the children begin to feel cold, prompting them to go get some winter clothes. As they return the children thank Barney for the winter clothes, in which Barney stated that he didn't put them where they found them. BJ wonders as to who put them where they were, prompting him to runaway at the sight of a polar bear. Everyone proceeds to sing ""It's C-C Cold BRRRR!". After the song and the polar bear leaves, Mike then notices something waddling on stage. No one else notices, prompting Barney to ask the audience if they saw anything. As they look around, they soon see two penguins who begin to dance, queuing the song "Look at Me I'm Dancing!". During the song, Barney comes out ice skating and then Sarah pushes him backstage. After the song, the sky becomes dark, in which Barney explains that its the norther lights. Because of the many colors that appear, everyone sings "The Rainbow Song". Baby Bop soon begins to feel cold and Barney tells her that the next place their going is somewhere warm.
Act 2
Sarah's toy boat, which is now a real boat, is now seen on stage and they all sail to the next place while singing "I'd Love to Sail". Upon arrival, Barney goes to put the ship away and everyone wonders as to where they are. Barney informs everyone that they are at the beach. Upon walking on the sand, the sand becomes hot for Baby Bop's feet, prompting her to hop up and down and for everyone to sing "The Baby Bop Hop". After the song ends, the sand no longer feels hot to Baby Bop's feet. Mike soon begins to feel hot with all the sunshine, which prompts Barney to give everyone sunglasses and sunscreen. The sunscreen bottle becomes empty when it's BJ's turn for sunscreen, in which then Baby Bop finds a bigger bottle to squeeze on him. Upon seeing the bottle BJ runs away from Baby Bop as Barney and the children sing "Mr. Sun". At the end of the song, Baby Bop squeezes a large amount of sunscreen on BJ. Baby Bop notices that the audience didn't get any sunscreen and hints that she'll squeeze some on the audience. Before she can squeeze any, BJ comes back out with Ginger the dog. Barney thinks that Ginger wants to play a game, which they eventually sing the song "BINGO". Ginger leaves, making Donny think that she went to dig in the sand. This prompts the gang to make a sandcastle while singing "Castles So High". After the song , Ducks waddle onto the stage and everyone sings "The Duckies Do".
After the song, the gang assumes that the ducks went back in the water, which prompts a conversation about water. BJ, Baby Bop and the children then ask Barney if they can take a trip under the sea. Using their imaginations, they arrive on the ocean floor. Noticing that there aren't any fish, Barney asks the audience to hold up their fishes and wave them around. Everyone then sings "If I Lived Under the Sea". After the song ends, Mike wants everyone to look inside a pirate's chest. Upon opening the chest, bubble float out and they all sing the song "Bubbles". After the song ends, BJ suggests they close the chest as they won't find any gold. Gina suggests that they might find goldfish instead, which prompts a conversation about fish. Baby Bop says that her favorite fish is a starfish, which prompts a starfish (appearing like Elvis Presley) to appear and sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". After the starfish leaves, everyone thanks Barney for bringing them under the sea. Barney suggests that they should thank the audience due to them using their imaginations to make everything happen, which queues the song "Just Imagine" As the song is sung, a whale comes out on stage and eventually goes back stage as the song ends.
Because the audience used their imaginations, Barney, BJ Baby Bop and the children say thank you to them. Everyone then reflects that their trip took them to lots of colorful places, which prompts them to sing "Colors All Around". During the song, the curtain opens to see Gina's toy globe become giant and all the animals around it. After the song, Barney tells the audience that what makes the world so special is sharing it with people we love, which queues "I Love You" to be sung. Everyone waves goodbye after the song and Barney blows a kiss to the audience.
As confetti falls, Jackson, Stacy and Laura end back up in a room where confetti continues to fall.

Trivia
- This live show / video marked:
- The first major live show to not have any new Barney songs.
- In this show, the arrangement of the song, "Just Imagine", used was also a prototype of the one used from "Fairy Tales" onwards. In addition, the second verse was also cut out.
- It is rumored that the footage from the tour commercial was filmed at Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee.
Cast
- From January to May 2003 (the first leg) of the tour, Sarah Vernon Swartz and Corby Sullivan portrayed as the costume performers of Barney.[9][10]
- Rebecca Wilson (who played Kelly in Barney Live! In New York City) was credited as a dancer.
- In the first quarter of the tour, Hayden Tweedie reprised her role of Sarah. She was replaced by Tory Green in Fall 2003.
- On that note, this Barney stage show marks the only national tour and the first stage show since Barney Live! In New York City to feature child cast members from the show reprising their roles.
- In addition, Katherine Pully was also asked to take part in the tour reprising her role as Beth but ultimately declined.[11]
- Although Hayden Tweedie is not seen reprising her role as Sarah in this video, she is seen portraying her character in the book adaption of this video.
- On that note, this Barney stage show marks the only national tour and the first stage show since Barney Live! In New York City to feature child cast members from the show reprising their roles.
- David Voss plays the Polar Bear and Starfish.
Characters
- This show marked the only appearances of Mike played by Blake Garrett, Donny played by Alex Collins, Sarah played by Tory Green, and Gina played by Alexis Acosta. However, prior to this, Tory Green made her first cameo in the trailer of Come on Over to Barney's House and she appeared in the "Barney Says" segment in "It's Your Birthday, Barney".
- This show marked the only time Stacy and Laura appeared together.
Presentation
- Unlike the two previous stage show videos (Barney's Big Surprise and Barney's Musical Castle), there are no intermission scenes or references in this one.
- When this live show was released on video, it was edited with scenes of season nine's cast members (Stacy, Laura, and Jackson). The beginning was also edited, as the beginning of the original stage show had Barney doll spinning on the idea bench before coming to life. Instead, we see the kids imagine Barney putting on a show, which later immediately cuts to Barney coming through the curtains. In the UK video releases, three British children named Mia, Oscar and Sarah prepare for a pretend trip with Barney (a Barney plush toy that could be bought in stores, like in the US version) and imagine going on a trip around the world. One of the kids spins the globe and from there, it transitions to Barney coming through the curtains (much like in the US opening).
- In some scenes of the video where the stage show was filmed, Jackson, Laura and Stacy are seen in several scenes amongst many of the audience members who interact with Barney at the auditorium. The UK release of this video also includes the footage of the US release. Because of that, there was never a performance that was filmed internationally to include Mia, Oscar and Sarah with the audience.
- In the show itself, a Barney doll sat on the idea bench before the show started. Right after the overture, the Idea Bench started to spin with a timpani roll, smoke arising from behind it. The spinning became increasingly faster as the bench went farther back. When the costumed Barney came through the curtains, the doll on the bench appeared to vanish. This was achieved with a part of the bench that was separate from the rest of the bench. The Barney doll was actually attached to this platform. This small platform for the doll flipped upside down, the front of the hollow, bottomless seat hiding the doll when the costumed Barney appeared, insuring that the two were never seen at the same time. The top of the Barney doll's head can be seen under the right bench seat in various shots of the home video. The outline of the bottom the platform can be seen on this seat of the bench as well. In addition to the live version this is the only time where we hear a male announcer saying "When we play in the park with Barney, we spin around on the idea bench and use our imaginations. If you want to play with Barney, use your imagination." rather than the "Today's appearance of Barney is made possible by your imagination" announcement.
Release date
- This video was released the same day "All About Me" aired.
- This video was released on Brian Eppes' twenty-fifth birthday, Jordan Kaufman's seventeenth birthday, Blake Garrett's twelfth birthday, and Cameron ten Napel's fifth birthday.
