Barney is a singing and dancing purple dinosaur who embodies love and the main protagonist of the series Barney's World. Barney is a great listener who helps his friends work through challenges in a way that is caring to themselves and others.[5] Whenever children shout "Hey, Barney!", he magically appears.

Barney's iteration for Barney's World is based off of the classic design that was already established for Barney & Friends and its predecessor Barney & The Backyard Gang. Steve Remen, a storyboard artist for Nelvana, developed the character design for Barney in Barney's World (alongside Baby Bop and Billy).
