Barney is a singing and dancing purple dinosaur who embodies love and the main protagonist of the series Barney's World. Barney is always ready for fun, and he uses his big purple magic to turn everyday moments into grand adventures. Barney is a great listener who helps kids explore their big emotions (whether they’re feeling happy, sad, or anything in between) and he helps his friends work through challenges in a way that is caring to themselves and others. Barney is also known to glow, as he glows and spawns heart shaped fireworks whenever he's full of joy and happiness (as explained in the special I Love Me Too), although he sometimes has the ability to glow without the hearts fireworks by command ("I Lovey You"). He can also fly, by whizzing his tail.

Unlike "classic Barney" who uses his imagination, this iteration of Barney does magic to make things happen. It's also depicted that unlike "classic Barney", this iteration of Barney has shown to be frustrated ("Making Magic") and depressed ("Dances with Goblins") alongside his optimism. In addition, unlike "classic Barney" who springs to life from a child's imagination, springing up from a doll to full size, this iteration of Barney magically appears whenever children shout "Hey, Barney!".

Design

Barney's iteration for Barney's World is based off of the classic design that was already established for Barney & Friends and its predecessor Barney & The Backyard Gang. The design of this iteration of Barney was made using DALL-E 3, an AI system developed by OpenAI that creates custom images and art based on text prompts. Mattel, owners of the Barney IP, had already been using AI to assist with their other Mattel brands and IPs. Various artists at Nelvana would also assist with the character design and models for Barney in Barney's World, including Steve Remen, a storyboard artist for Nelvana, (who also helped to develop designs for Baby Bop and Billy).
