"Barney - The Song" is the title song for Barney's Great Adventure, written by Broadway songwriter Jerry Herman. In the film and for the film's soundtrack, it was sung by Bernadette Peters.
Background[]
Jerry Herman was approached by Sheryl Leach to write a song for Barney's Great Adventure.[1] Herman felt that he couldn't do it, as he didn't usually write for characters he didn't create[2] and he felt Barney was too simplistic.[1][3] During a visit with his goddaughter Sarah, she began telling him about a play date she had with her Barney doll. Hearing this, he realized that Barney symbolizes imagination and this gave him the hook to start writing the song.[2]
Lyrics[]
If Barney the dinosaur
Comes knocking on your front door,
Just go and play with him,
Find your way with him
To the world of imagination.
Oh, Barney, your smiling face
Can make life a better place.
So, smile along with him,
Sing a song with him
In the world of imagination.
When there's no one there
To understand,
He pops up and takes you by the hand
To some enchanted land.
So, Barney, our purple friend,
Our friendship will never end.
Just keep on needing us,
Keep on leading us
To the world of imagination.
When there's no one there
To understand,
He pops up and takes you by the hand
To some enchanted land.
So, Barney, our purple friend,
Our friendship will never end.
And even when we're grown,
We'll be glad we've known
Barney's world of imagination.
Barney's world of imagination!
Barney.
Barney.
Barney...
If Barney the dinosaur
Comes knocking on your front door,
Just go and play with him,
Find your way with him
To the world of imagination.
Oh, Barney, your smiling face
Can make life a better place.
So, smile along with him,
Sing a song with him
In the world of imagination.
When there's no one there
To understand,
He pops up and takes you by the hand
To some enchanted land.
Oh, Barney, our purple friend,
Our friendship will never end.
Just keep on needing us,
Keep on leading us
To the world of imagination.
Barney's world of imagination!
So, Barney, our purple friend,
Our friendship will never end.
And even when we're grown,
We'll be glad we've known
Barney's world of imagination.
Barney's world of imagination!
Barney.
Barney.
Barney...
