- March 31: Barney's Great Adventure: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is released.
- July 21: La Gran Sorpresa de Barney is released.
- August 18: Barney's Sing Along: Halloween Party is released.
- August 23: Barney's Great Adventure Sing Along is released to stores.
- December: Barney is named #1 Kids Artist on Billboard's "Year in Music" for the third time.
- May 19: The soundtrack, Barney's Big Surprise! Live on Stage is re-released with the front cover matching the home video front cover.
- November 3: Songs in the Key of Purple is packaged with selected Barney home videos.

- January 18: Barney attends the 55th Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.[1]
- February 10: Lyons Partnership filed a lawsuit on New Jersey Costume shops for selling imitation Barney costumes.
- March 3: Barney appears at Planet Hollywood.
- March 27: Barney's Great Adventure is premieres at Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.
- April 3: Barney's Great Adventure is released in theaters in the United States.
- April 8: Barney appears at La Brea Tar Pits to put his footprints in cement in to promote the release of the movie.
- April 26: Barney's Big Surprise ends its North American tour at the PNE Coliseum, Vancouver BC.
- May 26-June 7: The Spanish version of Barney's Big Surprise performs at various venues in Mexico.
- Early November: Barney's Big Surprise begins an eight city tour of the UK at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
- November 26: Barney and the kids performed "If All the Raindrops" at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
- November 30: Barney appears at the 1998 Bright Lights of LA Theater Lighting Event at the ABC Entertainment Center in Los Angeles, California.
- December 21: The UK tour of Barney's Big Surprise wraps up at the Sheffield Arena.
Home video releases[]
- January 13: It's Time For Counting is released to stores. Also, Barney Rhymes with Mother Goose is re-released.
- February 12: Down on Barney's Farm is released to stores, after being only available through Time Life, possibly to promote Barney's Great Adventure.
- March 17: Barney In Outer Space is released to stores.
- Late March: My Party with Barney is available to purchase through Kideo.
- May 19: The home video, Barney's Big Surprise is released to stores.
- July 18: Barney's Exercise Circus and Barney's Parade of Numbers are re-released separately.
- August 18: Barney's Halloween Party is released to stores.
- September 1: Barney's Great Adventure is released on video to stores. It is the first video that was released on DVD. Barney's First Adventures is available to receive through the mail.
- September 29: Waiting for Santa is re-released one more time and has new previews.
- November 3: Good, Clean Fun! / Oh, Brother...She's My Sister Video 2-Pack is released to stores.
Merchandise[]
- March:
- During a two day period, Home Shopping Network received 9,000 orders for a Barney gift set from Kideo Productions. Included was My Party with Barney, a phone-personalized Barney book, and twenty-four photo-personalized stickers that featured the child's name and face.[2]
- My First Colgate Barney toothbrush began shipping.[3]

- March 28: Barney's First Adventures airs on Fox Kids.
- November 1: Lyrick Studios announces an animated spin-off of Barney & Friends: BJ & The Radical Rumblebutts. The series does not come to fruition.
- November 2:
- Season five of Barney & Friends premieres on PBS.
- Season one of Barney & Friends is removed from the PBS rotation.
- November 19: Barney appears on The Oprah Winfrey Show to wish the McCaughey septuplets a happy first birthday.[6]
- November 27: Season five finale of Barney & Friends on PBS.
- December 13: Barney appears on ITV's This Morning program in the UK, performing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and played by Roger Bunnage, the performer of Arbie the Robot.
- December 26: Barney appears again on GMTV with Dave Benson Phillips, with BJ and Baby Bop appearing shortly after.
