The following is an overview of Barney-related news and events that have occurred in the year 1997.

  • September: Lyrick Studios teamed up with Palladium Interactive to launch the Barney website (which was found at www.barneyonline.com).[3]

Events[]

  • March 17: Barney attends The National Cable TV Association convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • March 24: Barney meets Nelson Mandela after attending the Rand Show, the largest consumer show in South Africa.[1] A donation was made in Barney's name to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.[4] The two met at the Johannesburg, South Africa headquarters of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Mandela extended an invitation to meet with Barney when he heard Barney was interested in extending a hug of goodwill.[5]
  • August 18: Barney appears with Irish boy band Boyzone and Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) during the second half of Bean premiere at Cologne, Germany.[6]
  • November 27: Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ performed "Imagine" at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. That same day, the Barney balloon was destroyed and had to be deflated due to high winds.
  • November: Barney appears as the Grand Marshall of the Auckland, NZ Christmas Parade.[1]
  • December 16-19: Barney appears at Liang Court in Singapore for a Christmas sing-along.
  • December 6-10: Barney, Baby Bop and BJ appeared together at Australia's Wonderland in Sydney. A week-long appearance was held for all three dinos with twice-daily shows at 11am and 2:30pm in the Golden Nugget Theatre.[1][7]

  • April: A panel of journalists voted Barney & Friends as the number one children's program in Mexico.[1]
  • September 14: Barney makes an appearance on Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee, and sings "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain" and "If You're Happy and You Know It".
  • October 19: Barney makes an appearance on CBS News and Sings "My Kite" and "I Love You".
  • November: Hachaverim Shel Barney debuts in Israel, marking the first time the Barney & Friends TV series was produced outside the US.
  • November 3: Season four of Barney & Friends premieres on PBS. Barney & Friends episodes become encoded with signals to interact with the ActiMates Barney doll.
  • November 10: Barney appears on ITV's This Morning program in the UK, performing "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain" and played by Roger Bunnage, the performer of Arbie the Robot.
  • November 28: Season four finale of Barney & Friends on PBS.
  • December 25: Barney appears on GMTV along with B1 and B2 from Bananas in Pyjamas help to build a snowman to introduce "Fun Song Factory" in the UK, he later appeared with Dave Benson Phillips to introduce Bananas in Pyjamas.
