James Turner was a surprise special guest who appeared in the episode "Eat, Drink And Be Healthy!", which was a part of the first season of Barney & Friends. Turner is a children's musician and, as indicated in the episode, a good friend of Barney's. A few of Turner's songs have appeared in various Barney episodes, such as "Silly Supper" and "Rickey Raccoon".

Within the Barney & Friends episode that Turner appeared in, Barney suggested that given he and the children were talking about farmers, he figured Turner could sing them a song about farming. Turner, who's happy to do it, explained to everyone that farmers work hard growing things for people to eat, leading him to sing a song about what some of the things that farmers have to do ("Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow"). Everyone joins him in song.

After the song, Turner mentions that due to the way the children are dressed, he assumes they've also been learning about food during the day. After hearing the responses of what the others like to eat, he mentions they're all good choices and different at the same time, because everyone is different. To show them what he means, he begins to sing "Silly Supper" a song about a young bird who recommends good things he likes to eat.

After the song, Turner expresses how much of a good time he's had with Barney and the children, and eventually tells them goodbye as he had to leave.
