Li-an Chen is a character who only appeared in the episode "China", which was a part of the tenth season of Barney & Friends. She is BJ's pen-pal from China. Li-an was portrayed by Ty Farris.
In the episode, BJ has been waiting for a letter from her for a week. Li-an's letter eventually came, in which she shared her fun during the week along with photos. Some things she shared with BJ included a photo of her little brother eating lunch, using chopsticks, a kite she made with her father, a photo of the Great Wall of China and a dragon costume during a celebration. Towards the end of her letter, she hopes for BJ to write back detailing a few of the things he likes to do while also expressing that she'd becoming to visit him on Thursday, which was the day that BJ received the letter. To ensure that she feels at home, BJ, with the help of his friends, decide to make the park feel like China.
Li-an eventually comes to the park, accompanied by her mother, and his amazed by the lanterns. Barney expresses that there are more surprises to come thanks to BJ and his friends. After watching a dragon dance, Li-an greets BJ with a bow. While she appreciates the park decorated for her, she expresses to BJ that she wanted to see what it was like here on a normal day, but she understands as to why he did it as he wants to be her friend. Li-an expresses that she wants to be BJ's friend too, which is the reason why she came to visit him while also expressing that she hopes he can visit her in China too.
Given that BJ later expressed that he was hungry, the two decide to go and get hotdogs.
