Barney Wiki

Pat Reeder (born in Dallas, Texas)[1] is a writer and humorist, most notable for contributing as a writer and guest researcher for "Huckabee," on TBN. Prior to writing for "Huckabee", Reeder was the original head writer for Barney & The Backyard Gang. Reeder wrote the first three videos for the video series: The Backyard Show, Three Wishes and A Day At The Beach.

Barney & The Backyard Gang[]

Reeder's dream was to write for David Letterman, however, he had to move back to Texas due to caring for his parents who fell ill. While in Texas, Richard C. Leach requested Reeder into his office to tell Reeder to make something filmable with treatments he had been given (from Sheryl Leach) that were later conceived to be Barney & The Backyard Gang.

While working on the scripts for the video series, Reeder originally envisioned Barney as a cartoon-style green dinosaur dressed in hip fashion (shades, tee-shirt and beret) to be like the character David Addison Jr. (portrayed by Bruce Willis) in the American comedy drama television series called Moonlighting, who was a fun, wise-cracking guy. Reeder's vision didn't survive the rewrites. Due to Reeder's bold ideas, it resulted in his termination from Barney & The Backyard Gang, which Reeder received a letter about his creative spirit. Although he was terminated from working for The Lyons Group, Reeder remained on staff through the end of the shoot.

  • Despite writing for Barney, he doesn't like to talk about it,[2] however he later appeared in the documentary I Love You, You Hate Me recounting his time with Barney & The Backyard Gang.
  • Reeder is responsible for incorporating the aspect of imagination into Barney's character. The incorporation pays tribute to Reeder's late mother, Nelda June Reeder who told him as a child that "with a book and your imagination you can go anywhere in the universe."
