Shelley Carol Aubrey (born September 27, 1952 in Dallas, Texas) is best known to be an American dialogue coach and performance director of the live-action children's television series Barney & Friends.
Career[]
Barney & Friends[]
After purchasing a Barney & The Backyard Gang VHS for her young son, Aubrey noticed the name of Sheryl Leach, a former classmate of hers and the creator of Barney, on the back cover of the VHS. Aubrey sent Leach a note wishing her luck on her endeavors. A couple of weeks Leach called Aubrey. Unable to hire her for anything, Leach put Aubrey on an interview with Jim Rowley and Ben Vaughn who were directors of Barney & Friends. Rowley and Vaugn decided that Aubrey would be the dialogue coach for Barney & Friends. The role saw Aubrey with the cast of children one day a week to help them speak more naturally. Eventually, her role was moved to occurring twice a week because she would be on set.
While on the set of Barney & Friends, Aubrey overheard that Penny Wilson, a choreographer for the series, was looking for a new assistant. While conversing with Ben Vaughn one day, she suggested that she could be an assistant of hers, in which Vaugn encouraged her to go for the position. She became an assistant to Penny Wilson starting with the fifth season of Barney & Friends. Aubrey eventually became the performance director of the series, taking over from Penny Wilson, when season seven began production. As a performance director, she blocked the entire show, had meetings with directors and tweaked what was necessary.[1]
