Women's History Month

Women's History Month is an annual, month that recognizes and celebrates the contributions of women to events in history and history that's currently in the making. Having originally started as a single day of observance in 1909, it evolved into a week-long celebration in 1978 and finally a full month in 1987.

Alongside Women's History Month is International Women's Day, a global annual holiday observed on March 8th to celebrate the achievements of women and raise awareness of women's equality.[1]

Barney

The Barney franchise was initially created by Sheryl Leach, a mother who recognized a void in the market for video programming directed at preschoolers. After getting production finished on the first three videos in the Barney & The Backyard Gang series, Leach organized a team of neighborhood mothers, called ‘Mom Blitzers,’ to begin selling videos, one at a time, to toy and video stores.[2] As the series began to become popular, women in Dallas, Texas were falling in love with Barney because of their children. A few women wanted to license Barney for stamps, in which they were dubbed the 'Stamp Ladies'.[3]

Eventually, Barney & The Backyard Gang was spun into a series called Barney & Friends, where videos began to sell worldwide. Astral Media Inc. was one of the distributors of Barney, where they distributed the videos in Canada. Very few men wanted to work on selling Barney within Astral Media, which opened the door for many women to take the opportunity to join and learn within an environment that was female focused.[4]

Barney & Friends was a huge success on television, even after the series ended. When reruns aired on Universal Kids the series ranked number two in women eighteen to forty-nine.[5]
