Barney - Native Americans in We've Got Rhythm

When brought up on Barney & Friends, Native Americans have told and passed down exciting stories for Barney and his friends to enjoy. First appearing in the season four episode "We've Got Rhythm" (1997) was Marvin Johnson and his daughter Mica Johnson. While learning about drums in the episode, we learn that drums and dances have been important to Marvin's people for a long time. He learned them when he was young and then taught them to his daughter. The dance Marvin and Mica showed to Barney and his friends was "The Butterfly Dance", which told the story of a lady butterfly who is very sad when her husband dies, but in times learns to be happy again.

The dancing fun continues in the season ten episode "Dancing" (2006). In this episode, we're introduced to John Roady, his wife Ester Roady, their daughters Marie and Rose Roady and their friend Michael Gabbard. They show a dance to Barney, Riff and Jamal called "The Grass Dance". "The Grass Dance" told a story to flatten down the tall prairie grass so the people could have a nice place to dance at pow wows.

The stories continue in the season eleven episode "The Chase" (2007). In this episode, Barney tells a story about a coyote, a moose, a fox and bear. This story is an old story told by Native Americans called the Kootenai people.
