"What's That Shadow?" is the eleventh episode of the first season of Barney & Friends.

Plot[]

A thunderstorm! Lightning! Thunder! Just the kind of little frights that don't seem so little to kids. But with Barney there, those fears can be turned into fun and games. There's a "scariest shadow" contest that shows just how scary some pretty silly things can be. Paper plates and cups magically become not-so-spooky monster masks. And a puppet show is a kid-sized parable on how not to fear a trip to the doctor's office. Sirens, beasts under the bed, the dark - it's amazing how a purple dinosaur can make some of the most dreadful things seem not so scary! And Shawn must overcome his past trauma with dogs so he can meet Min's puppy.

Adaptations[]

Hachaverim Shel Barney[]

  • In the Hebrew version, "Sampung Mga Daliri" and "The Shadow Song" weren't sung. However, "Ten Little Monsters" was sung, but it was shortened.
  • The kids greet Baby Bop when she arrives unlike the original version where they and Barney get scared by her after she bumped into them.
  • The Barney doll sits on the window sill instead of on the table in this version.

Home media[]

This episode was released on VHS by Time Life Video.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: Some things that seem scary at first often turn out to not be that way in the end.
  • This episode marked:
    • The first time Baby Bop is around during "The Barney Bag".
    • The only appearance of Min's sister, who appears at the end of this episode.
    • The second time Baby Bop is not seen leaving when Barney transformed back into a doll, the first time being "My Family's Just Right For Me". Since she was there while Min and Shawn were leaving, it's possible that she might have left off-screen while Barney turned back into a doll.
    • The only time "Did You Ever See a Lassie?" was sung in E major.
    • The first time Min sang a song in Tagalog.
  • "Ride of the Valkyries" from Die Walkure is played when Barney and the kids make their own storm.
  • Kathy claims that her family has a cat named Fluffy during a story she tells with Baby Bop. However, it is later stated in "Our Furry Feathered Fishy Friends" that she cannot have a cat both because her apartment building does not allow cats or dogs and because her grandmother is allergic. This may be an error on the writers' part.
  • This is the fourth episode in which Kathy is not seen with her teddy bear.
  • Derek wears the same shirt he previously wore in "The Treasure Of Rainbow Beard."
  • Kathy wears the same shirt she previously wore in "Going Places!" and "Caring Means Sharing".
  • Min wears the same shirt she previously wore in "Playing It Safe."
  • Shawn pets Min's puppy in this episode, but in "At Home With Animals" he reveals he's allergic to animal hair. It's possible the allergy developed between these episodes, or is an error made by the writers.
